These two guys asked me to take their picture when they saw me with my big camera around my neck. There's nothing I love more than making a portrait, so I arranged them and they loved the result!

Rival Magazine Photographs

This week I made a couple of portraits for Duke and UNC's Rival Magazine. Rival is a publication created by Duke and UNC students and distributed on both campuses.

Jasson Strasser won a tidy sum at this summer's World Series of Poker. He started playing poker online, and that is how he still makes his money. Strasser is a senior at Duke majoring in engineering.

Danny and Anne Marie Amacher met in their sophomore year at a church where all the attendees were their age and most of them were single. Danny had seen Anne Marie speak in church and knew he wanted to take her on a date. "I had wanted to ask her out but she was always surrounded by her church friends," Danny said. He waited until she broke away from her pack of friends and asked her out. They were married last December and say the married life provides stability. "It's nice to have someone to cheer you on," Anne Marie said, "everyday."

The Philosopher Stands Between Worlds

Jason Bowers teaches philosophy classes at UNC Chapel Hill while working towards his Ph.D. in philosophy. In one class he and his students are studying evil, hell, and immortality.
"One thing that gets me is vagueness about immortality," Jason said, speaking of the contradiction between people's desire to have more time to live yet not desiring to live forever.
"There's no last call at the bar of life."

"Valentine's Day is my second favorite holiday, after Halloween, of course."
Jason met his girlfriend, Luka, the week before Valentine's Day. He bought her a box of heart-shaped chocolates and spray painted the box black. "I was careful to remove chocolates first," he said.

Jason lives with his cat, Gozer.

Jason's favorite colors are black and white.

My First Football Game Ever

Tonight I ventured out into Chatham County, NC to shoot the Chatham Central High football game. This was the first football game I had EVER been to in my entire life.

For a class assignment I had to use one fixed length lens and shoot a variety of shots. I chose a 200mm lens and headed to the Chapel Hill Community Center Park. It was my first time really using a 200mm lens, and I'm glad I tried it!

Inverness, Torch Lake, MI

For the past century my family has been visiting a pristine lake in Michigan during the only slightly cold northern summers. Named for our family's origin in Scotland, the house, Inverness, instantly feels like a place to call home. Hand-made birch wood furnishings are scattered throughout the house and porch along with well worn field guides and family photographs from the early 20th century.

Situated directly on Torch Lake, Inverness has seen many generations of the Rosses, and strengthened our ties as a family. These photographs are a few from the couple of precious weeks spent at Inverness this past summer.

Noon to Full Moon

Mid May 2006 some Carrboro friends and I threw a roving party beginning at noon and going until the full moon. We started with a late brunch, played croquet, and migrated to another house for body painting. From there we moved to dinner at my house followed by a front porch talent show of sorts. Finally the party found its way to a Pine Street house where the dance floor undulated into the night.

During the day I made it a point to make everyone's portrait. These are a few of my favorites:

Christa and Stu's Wedding

Set in an elegant Greensboro hotel, Christa and Stu's wedding was the first one I photographed by myself. Lucky for me, the wedding was beautiful and simple, and the guests were good humored and a delight to photograph.

Fresh tomatoes and a summer smoothie were featured at Lantern restaurant in Chapel Hill this summer. Yes, I do get to eat the food I shoot!
